Hey all! Just thought I'd write a quick note and let you all know that I'm taking a class at Concept Design Academy in Pasadena. It's Environment Design taught by the awesome James Paick , who's worked on a ton of fantastic IPs, one of my favorites being the Uncharted games. So, I'm really excited to be taking his class, and will be posting up my homework assignments every week. This first week we're doing 10 paintings, 5 of which will be Master Studies, and 5 will be of our own creation. I'm doing the studies right now, and I feel I'm learning a lot. They're all just grey scale at this point, just working on values before getting to color. Anyway, I'm really excited about showing you guys the progress I make through the next ten weeks of the course!

My Dream is for You to be My Boss.

Journal Entry: Thu Apr 17, 2014, 2:31 PM
So, as many of you know, I'm working on and off on a creator-owned property which I intend to publish both online and in book form. Recently I became aware of a new crowd-funding site call Patreon( www.patreon.com ), which I believe has the very real potential to revolutionize how artists and creators make their living, and bring the idea of being a "Patron of the Arts" to its purest form. Unlike Kickstarter and other similar crowd-funding sites, Patreon is a system in which "Patrons" give small monthly contributions to artists/projects that they want to fund, and in return they get to be a part of making projects happen that otherwise never would have a chance. There are also similar incentives that are employed as rewards for higher donations, similar to Kickstarter. I am extremely excited about this possibility, and hope to someday be able to transition from my current state of working for various companies at which I have a boss that I report to, who has his boss, who has another boss, who then has a board of directors, who have focus groups that tell them what they should fund and what they shouldn't. Patreon and other sites like it take out all the middle men and give a direct path from the audience, to the creator. I think this is brilliant, and I fully intend to try to utilize this incredible system in the future. If you'd like to listen to an interview with the founders of Patreon by the awesome Chris Oatley of Oatley Academy fame, click here: chrisoatley.com/crowdfunding-f… Thanks for reading, and supporting! I'd love to hear your thoughts on Patreon specifically, and crowd-funding in general.

Hey all,

Just thought I should let you know the first episode of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that I did storyboards on just aired! Best of all, its currently up on Nickelodeon's website so you can watch it for free! I worked on the second half,(***SPOILER WARNING*** mainly the sequence where the turtles escape Shredder's lair and also the part where April, Casey and Donnie take on the worm in the sewer and it barfs on them). I worked on this episode about a year ago, so its exciting to finally have it come out. Anyway, here's a link to the show: www.nick.com/videos/clip/tmnt-… Hope you enjoy it!

Okay, so you all know by now that I didn't post yesterday like I said I would...And I would have, had it been at all possible to do so and also stay in good standing at my regular job. This was a really intense week of work, and I literally did nothing on my Project: OPUS stuff. That said, I fully intend to get back to it this week. Probably tomorrow I will start refining one of the concepts I created, and it will probably be another week until I post. Sorry for disappointing some of you, but no one is more disappointed than me! Unfortunately sometimes we all have to prioritize in the direction of where the money is coming from :) Hope you're all well, and thanks for your support!

Okay, so after hearing the almost unanimous feedback, and following my own creative impulse, I'm going to start alternating 1 week of once a day sketches with 1 week of 1 finished concept piece. So, I'm going to post next Monday a more refined version of one of my previous sketches. That means no daily posts until then. Once that piece is posted, I'll do a week of daily sketches again, and then repeat the process. Thank you all for your feedback, and for following the production of this project! :)

Happy New Year everyone! As is the tradition, I've made a resolution, and that is to work on my dream project every day, and share it with you! As some of you may know, I've been spending what little spare time I have working on and off on a creator-owned project for quite some time now. I've decided to create a blog, which I will update every day with developmental sketches from this forthcoming project. For now, its code named Project: OPUS! A bit grandiose perhaps, but I intend it to be my greatest work, which is why I chose the name. Please follow and share if you'd like to help spread the word. Thanks!  project-opus.blogspot.com/V Turnaround by MicahJGunnell

Hey peeps, just wanted to say thanks for all the birthday wishes! I'm insanely busy right now and unfortunately haven't been posting anything on DA in a while. I'm hoping that will change in the next month or so when I finish up a bit of freelance work I've been doing on top of my TMNT storyboarding. I really want to do some personal work soon, and when I do, you all will be the first to see! Thanks again for the kind words and comments, and for looking at my art!

Hey all,

Its kind of old news but I didn't want to announce it immediately...I just recently joined the team on Nickelodeon's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles show! Its a huge honor to be working with all the talented folks on here...There are some amazing board artists on the show. Also, the show itself is great in my opinion, so that makes it even more of a pleasure to be a part of it. On top of that, like most guys my age I grew up watching turtles, and its really nostalgic to be working with these characters. Anyway, if you haven't checked out the show yet, please do, you won't be disappointed!

I just finished the first layout for my creator owned book! Not a big accomplishment by any means, but its the start of a project that I've been developing for the past 13 years...My writer friend and I finally have distilled the story down to its essence, and we're moving forward with the production now. At this point all I have is a single layout, but its the first step in a journey that I've been wanting to embark on for such a long time. This project probably won't be completed until a few years now, but I'll be giving updates here and there as things get moving. I can promise that I will put my heart and soul into it, and for this reason I can't wait to share it with you guys!

Hey guys,

My new book, IDOLIZED, came out this week from Aspen comics so please try to pick it up if it looks like something you might be interested in. So far its getting great reviews on both the story and art, so I'm kind of excited about that :) This Saturday I'll be doing a signing at Emerald Knights in Burbank, CA...If you're in the area you should stop by, I'll hook you up with a free sketch if you buy the book and mention Deviantart! Hope to see you there! Here are some excerpts of reviews of the book:

My only complaint is that the 0 issue left me wanting more, and Issue 1 isn't due out 'till August.  I want to read more now!"

Strong recommendation to buy it and I will be there each and every month putting Idolized at the top of my stack.", "Please don't skip over anything in this issue. Read every word, explore every panel and don't you dare assume that the faux magazine pages in the back are just filler. This is going to be one of the richest titles of the year. In one issue there are already numerous agendas to be explored."

"I was very impressed with the issue.  It has a very interesting story, good character design, and the art in this book is gorgeous.  After I finished reading this issue I was compelled to pick it up again and just look though the art since it was so good.  For fans of superhero and are tired of DC or Marvel stuff give this zero issue of Idolized a shot it's got a great twist and the art is awesome as well."

So, finally got around to changing my handle...As I've said many times I'd been thinking of getting rid of this account in order to change my name, but DA made it easy for me with their new feature that allows you to change your handle as long as you have a premium membership. So, thankfully, I'll no longer have that title attached to me, as I have gone through many personal changes since I came up with it. It was originally intended to be extraordinarily arrogant sounding, which was meant as a joke...Long story, but anyway, I know there is a silent minority that immediately assumed I was cocky bastard based on that name...Which at one time might have been true, but that's definitely something has changed over the years...Anyway, I'm very happy to be able to make the switch :)

Yo peeps! Sorry for my total lack of updates...I really haven't been drawing anything that I can post as of late, which is both good and bad. Good because I'm drawing a lot, and getting paid for all of it! Bad because I just don't have time to draw anything else! Mainly what I'm drawing at the moment are storyboards, for Ultimate Spiderman and another show I can't even tell you about because its too awesome! Other than that, I've done a few doodles here and there, but nothing I really feel is worth posting. Hopefully soon I'll actually finish something and as soon as I do I'll start posting again. Hope all of you are well!

Original Art on Ebay.

Hey all,

So, I've just put three of the best pages from my Deadpool Team-Up issue up on Ebay...There's no reserve, and the first bid amounts are only $25-$50. Anyone that has ever wanted to own some of my art should check them out because they're probably going to sell for relatively low amounts. You can see the three pages in my DA gallery, they're the last three images that I uploaded. In addition to possibly getting these pages for a very low price, winning bidders will get a free copy of my sketchbook, limited to 200 copies with maybe about half of those already gone. That's a $20 value right there. Anyway, I'm starting to feel like I should be speaking with an Australian accent and telling you "but wait, there's more!", so I'm gonna shut up and give you the links. Hope all of you are well! www.ebay.com/itm/260949831994?…

Hey guys and gals, just wanted to say thanks for all the words of encouragement and solidarity. I've been wanting to answer everyone individually, but I just don't have the time unfortunately. I would say I was glad to hear that I'm not the only one going through struggles, but that's kind of like saying I'm glad you guys are struggling, so that's not what I'm trying to say! But, I guess what I mean is, it gives me strength and comfort knowing that we're all struggling together, and that there are many of us in this same boat. We all wish we weren't in the boat, but I for one am glad to have company :) I think it's quite easy to see the light at the end of the tunnel for me, but at the same time, when you're looking ahead at that tunnel all the time it makes the journey seem to take so much longer. I guess that's what I'm learning and working towards--doing everything I can in the present, to ensure that the future is what I hope it will be. Hope you're all doing well, and keeping on fighting!

Life is Struggle.

You know, I was feeling some of the natural highs and lows that artists have from time to time, wondering where I fit into art, what I should really be doing, and how I can achieve a higher level artistically. I'll admit, I was feeling a bit sorry for myself. Then I started to think about it, and realized that we're all going through this process. We're all frustrated. We all hit walls that we feel can't possible be surmounted. We all feel our art is inadequate, and at the same time, wonder why it doesn't get more notice from our audience. I don't want to get too deep or anything, I'm just voicing my self doubts, and inner thoughts, because I'm guessing someone that reads this is going through the same things, and can find some small consolation in knowing they aren't the only one! So, while the economy isn't so great, and while we may not all be as successful as we thought we would be when we were young, where we are, we are. We can either look at things in a positive light, or a negative one. I'm not putting on any rose-colored glasses, but I AM going to keep going, keep trying to grow and learn, and remembering to enjoy the process. Maybe someday I'll look back on this time with fondness, or maybe not, but I accept it as part of my story, and part of what will make my art what it will become. Hope all of you are well, and take something helpful from this little entry. :)
