Hey all,

I'll be attending the CTN Expo this weekend in Burbank...No booth, just walking around. Anyone else going?

San Diego.

Hey, I probably should have put an announcement up here sooner, but better late than never, right? So, yeah, I'll be at San Diego on Saturday and Sunday for the con...Heading down late tonight after I finish my portion of this episode of Ultimate Spiderman. I'll be at the Aspen Booth signing comics, doing commissions, selling my last few copies of my sketchbook, and doing free head sketches too. Stop by and say hi! Hope to see you there...

I Just Did Something Awesome...

I just finished the first layout for my creator owned book! Not a big accomplishment by any means, but its the start of a project that I've been developing for the past 13 years...My writer friend and I finally have distilled the story down to its essence, and we're moving forward with the production now. At this point all I have is a single layout, but its the first step in a journey that I've been wanting to embark on for such a long time. This project probably won't be completed until a few years now, but I'll be giving updates here and there as things get moving. I can promise that I will put my heart and soul into it, and for this reason I can't wait to share it with you guys!

Idolized Signing in Burbank.

Journal Entry: Fri Jun 29, 2012, 7:41 AM
  • Mood: Joy
Hey guys,

My new book, IDOLIZED, came out this week from Aspen comics so please try to pick it up if it looks like something you might be interested in. So far its getting great reviews on both the story and art, so I'm kind of excited about that :) This Saturday I'll be doing a signing at Emerald Knights in Burbank, CA...If you're in the area you should stop by, I'll hook you up with a free sketch if you buy the book and mention Deviantart! Hope to see you there! Here are some excerpts of reviews of the book:

[link]
#1 can't miss comic of the week.  "[A]n awesome story" "Adding to the great story is the amazing art delivered by Micah Gunnell."  "[I]t's great to see such an awesome new character come on the scene. My only complaint is that the 0 issue left me wanting more, and Issue 1 isn't due out 'till August.  I want to read more now!"

[link]
"Excellent."  "[a] well crafted and well done story."  "5 out of 5"

[link]
"David Schwartz has already drawn me in. I am filled with questions and have a wanting for more."  "[T]he artwork in Idolized is just gorgeous. David Curiel's colors just shine off the page."

[link]
"[W]ith fun writing, an intriguing protagonist, and some pretty brightly colored panels, Idolized looks like one new series worth a look."

[link]
"This might be the sleeper hit of the year. Everything popular is wrapped up inside this cover and two staples. There will be no stopping Aspen Comics with this title. Strong recommendation to buy it and I will be there each and every month putting Idolized at the top of my stack.", "Please don't skip over anything in this issue. Read every word, explore every panel and don't you dare assume that the faux magazine pages in the back are just filler. This is going to be one of the richest titles of the year. In one issue there are already numerous agendas to be explored."

[link]
"Idolized #0 is perhaps the greatest zero issue I've read to date",  "you're going to read Idolized #0 and be hooked",  "in every way, from art to words, this zero issue stands out as the start of something great."

[link]
"I was very impressed with the issue.  It has a very interesting story, good character design, and the art in this book is gorgeous.  After I finished reading this issue I was compelled to pick it up again and just look though the art since it was so good.  For fans of superhero and are tired of DC or Marvel stuff give this zero issue of Idolized a shot it's got a great twist and the art is awesome as well."

[link]
"I loved the first issue!...With a terrific story and amazing art, Idolized equals a hit series!"

[link]
"This is Aspen's first foray into the world of super hero comics and they do not disappoint"

[link]
"It's a fresh look at superheroes and reality television and it works. Joule's story is interesting and it'll be fun as a reader to find out what really happened."

Hey, check out the interview that two of my buds from the storyboard world, Jeff Wamester and Chris Copeland did with DA: [link] Two very talented, and super-nice guys.

Thanks!

So, finally got around to changing my handle...As I've said many times I'd been thinking of getting rid of this account in order to change my name, but DA made it easy for me with their new feature that allows you to change your handle as long as you have a premium membership. So, thankfully, I'll no longer have that title attached to me, as I have gone through many personal changes since I came up with it. It was originally intended to be extraordinarily arrogant sounding, which was meant as a joke...Long story, but anyway, I know there is a silent minority that immediately assumed I was cocky bastard based on that name...Which at one time might have been true, but that's definitely something has changed over the years...Anyway, I'm very happy to be able to make the switch :)

Yo peeps! Sorry for my total lack of updates...I really haven't been drawing anything that I can post as of late, which is both good and bad. Good because I'm drawing a lot, and getting paid for all of it! Bad because I just don't have time to draw anything else! Mainly what I'm drawing at the moment are storyboards, for Ultimate Spiderman and another show I can't even tell you about because its too awesome! Other than that, I've done a few doodles here and there, but nothing I really feel is worth posting. Hopefully soon I'll actually finish something and as soon as I do I'll start posting again. Hope all of you are well!

Original Art on Ebay.

Journal Entry: Sat Feb 4, 2012, 6:53 PM
  • Mood: Optimism
Hey all,

So, I've just put three of the best pages from my Deadpool Team-Up issue up on Ebay...There's no reserve, and the first bid amounts are only $25-$50. Anyone that has ever wanted to own some of my art should check them out because they're probably going to sell for relatively low amounts. You can see the three pages in my DA gallery, they're the last three images that I uploaded. In addition to possibly getting these pages for a very low price, winning bidders will get a free copy of my sketchbook, limited to 200 copies with maybe about half of those already gone. That's a $20 value right there. Anyway, I'm starting to feel like I should be speaking with an Australian accent and telling you "but wait, there's more!", so I'm gonna shut up and give you the links. Hope all of you are well! Keep Fighting.

Hey guys and gals, just wanted to say thanks for all the words of encouragement and solidarity. I've been wanting to answer everyone individually, but I just don't have the time unfortunately. I would say I was glad to hear that I'm not the only one going through struggles, but that's kind of like saying I'm glad you guys are struggling, so that's not what I'm trying to say! But, I guess what I mean is, it gives me strength and comfort knowing that we're all struggling together, and that there are many of us in this same boat. We all wish we weren't in the boat, but I for one am glad to have company :) I think it's quite easy to see the light at the end of the tunnel for me, but at the same time, when you're looking ahead at that tunnel all the time it makes the journey seem to take so much longer. I guess that's what I'm learning and working towards--doing everything I can in the present, to ensure that the future is what I hope it will be. Hope you're all doing well, and keeping on fighting!

Life is Struggle.

You know, I was feeling some of the natural highs and lows that artists have from time to time, wondering where I fit into art, what I should really be doing, and how I can achieve a higher level artistically. I'll admit, I was feeling a bit sorry for myself. Then I started to think about it, and realized that we're all going through this process. We're all frustrated. We all hit walls that we feel can't possible be surmounted. We all feel our art is inadequate, and at the same time, wonder why it doesn't get more notice from our audience. I don't want to get too deep or anything, I'm just voicing my self doubts, and inner thoughts, because I'm guessing someone that reads this is going through the same things, and can find some small consolation in knowing they aren't the only one! So, while the economy isn't so great, and while we may not all be as successful as we thought we would be when we were young, where we are, we are. We can either look at things in a positive light, or a negative one. I'm not putting on any rose-colored glasses, but I AM going to keep going, keep trying to grow and learn, and remembering to enjoy the process. Maybe someday I'll look back on this time with fondness, or maybe not, but I accept it as part of my story, and part of what will make my art what it will become. Hope all of you are well, and take something helpful from this little entry. :)

There's a New Sheriff in Town.

Journal Entry: Thu Jan 19, 2012, 9:01 AM
So, I've kind of fallen out of the habit of posting things on DA...Due to a variety of reasons, but mainly because I'm really busy with life(getting married, traveling back and forth from Brazil to the US) and with work(Idolized for Aspen Comics). I can't post much of the art that I'm producing at the moment. However, now that I'm back in the states and now have a far better internet connection than I did in Brazil, I've decided I'm going to start posting something every day here on my DA. Whether it be old stuff, or maybe some new sketches here and there, I'll be posting regularly, so be sure to check back every day! Also, I'll do my best to keep up with the comments...I've been really slacking off on that and I need to be better about it. I appreciate all of you that support and enjoy looking at my work!

Two books out in one day!

Journal Entry: Wed Sep 14, 2011, 7:53 PM
Hey everyone, its a bit late, but just wanted to write a quick notice to everyone that is a fan of my work...The long-awaited final issue of Dellec(#6) is in stores today, as is the last issue of Executive Assistant: ORCHID(#3). Please pick them up if you enjoy my work, and if not pick them up and burn them in public protest.

In other news, I just finished up my storyboard work on season 1 of the Ultimate Spiderman cartoon. Nothing has been confirmed yet for the second season, but if there is one, I'll be working on that coming up in January. It was a great experience working at Film Roman, lots of talented people are working on the show so I'm pretty sure you guys are gonna like it when it comes out...Which, I believe will be early 2012. Until production on the next season starts up, I'll be working on a brand new series for Aspen, 'IDOLIZED' with writer David Schwartz. I'm really excited about the book, as I've wanted to work with David ever since reading the pitch for what would become the book 'MELTDOWN' for Image comics a couple years ago. He's a great writer and a really nice guy...I can't wait to get started!  Anyway, hope all of you are well...Sorry for the lack of updates. I should be posting some new stuff on here in the near future. Hope all of you are well!

I'm posting a few preview pages of it, but you can also check out the preview here at Newsarama:  [link] Hopefully some of you picked it up already, but if not, there should still be copies available at your local store, if not, you can always order online from aspenstore.com or your favorite online retailer.

As for SDCC, I will be there at the Aspen Comics booth all day, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I'll be doing commissions, selling a few sketchbooks, doing free head sketches, and signing books. Hope to see you there!
